Okta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Federated Authentication team within the Enterprise Access pillar. The Enterprise Access team drives billions of authentications monthly, building single sign-on, strong authentication, provisioning, and threat protection technologies on a secure, reliable platform with 99.99% availability.
In this role, you will drive technical execution and architecture for the federated authentication platform, ensuring enterprise-grade standards for security, scalability, and performance. You will lead the design and implementation of core platform features and foundational framework components that enable extensibility for other engineering teams. You'll collaborate with Product Management, Design, and other Principal Engineers to shape the product roadmap and translate complex business requirements into sustainable technical strategy.
Key responsibilities include spearheading resolution of complex technical challenges such as performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and architectural limitations. You will champion technical excellence and innovation, identifying and advocating for new technologies and approaches that advance Okta's identity platform. You'll write clean, modular, well-tested, and maintainable code adhering to best practices, and proactively identify and address technical debt and performance improvements.
The Federated Authentication team is responsible for building the login, user onboarding, and recovery end-user experience for the Okta Identity Engine, leveraging security standards to provide core orchestration building blocks for a world-class login experience.
**Requirements:**
- 8+ years of software development experience, with at least 5 years focused on designing and building complex, enterprise-grade web applications
- Demonstrated experience as a technical leader with a proven track record of architecting and delivering large-scale, high-impact software projects
- Proficiency in at least one Object-Oriented language (Java, C#)
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguity and make high-judgment technical decisions
- Proven ability to mentor senior engineers and influence technical direction across multiple teams
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- Familiarity with distributed systems and backend architecture such as caching layers, event-driven architectures, and distributed data stores
- Knowledge of IAM protocols (OAuth, OIDC, SAML) and identity management concepts is a strong plus
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and secure coding practices is a strong plus
