Matillion is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Billing team and shape the future of data automation. The company builds Maia, an AI Data Automation platform that combines 15 years of data expertise with agentic AI to eliminate manual work for data teams. Customers like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack use Maia to deliver business impact faster. In this role, you will act as technical lead for the Billing team, guiding and unblocking five engineers (two junior, two mid-level, and one QA engineer). You will own integrations with third-party billing and marketplace platforms, spending significant hands-on time across production services from design through deployment and ongoing support. You will review code and guide the team to Matillion's engineering standards with a focus on product quality, DevOps, and security. You'll translate sprint requirements from the Engineering Manager and Product Manager into clear technical direction. You will become the subject matter expert in the billing domain and architecture, supporting triage and incident response, participating in on-call rotations, and proactively engaging customer-facing colleagues to prevent customer-facing issues. You will mentor team members, foster a culture that aligns engineering and product strategy, and contribute to cross-team initiatives such as ML capability development with the Data Science team for Maia. REQUIREMENTS: - Proficient in Java (core priority) with solid grounding in object-oriented design, distributed systems, and best practices including testability, observability, scalability, and security - Working React knowledge in a full-stack capacity - Experience across the full software development lifecycle via CI/CD tooling and agile methodologies (Kanban/Scrum) - Hands-on experience in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure) - Proven experience integrating with multiple third-party or marketplace platforms - Billing or usage-based/credit-consumption experience is a bonus, not essential - Clear bias for action, leading initiatives and mentoring others - Autonomy to solve problems independently and inquisitiveness to dig into root causes - Proactive, self-sufficient technical leader with integrity and growth mindset - Comfortable representing the team cross-functionally and staying calm under pressure during incidents
