Magical is an agentic automation platform transforming healthcare with production-ready AI agents. The company automates high-stakes healthcare workflows like prior authorizations and medical coding, enabling providers to focus on patient care while AI handles repetitive administrative tasks. Backed by Greylock, Coatue, and Lightspeed with $41M raised, Magical has demonstrated strong product-market fit with rapid customer expansion and 7-day proof-of-concepts delivering real value. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will shape the technical direction of Magical's AI agent systems. You'll drive product delivery, elevate engineering standards across the team, mentor peers, and remain hands-on with the codebase. The role involves orchestrating complex healthcare workflows that integrate queues, run state, browser automation, model calls, system evaluations, observability, and human-in-the-loop recovery mechanisms. Key responsibilities include: - Setting technical direction for core agent systems: automation building, runtime reliability, evaluations, and observability - Leading ambiguous backend and full-stack projects that materially advance the product - Improving engineering practices through better architecture, faster feedback loops, stronger code reviews, and clear standards - Mentoring teammates through pairing sessions, code reviews, and modeling strong engineering practices You'll transform messy customer inputs—SOPs, decision trees, portal behaviors, edge cases—into robust automations. This means building systems that draft workflows, test them, catch failures, suggest improvements, and trigger human intervention when necessary. Focus areas include runtime reliability, workflow pathways, evaluations, and specialized agents for repeatable healthcare workflows. This is a hybrid role based in the San Francisco office. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of software development experience - Led complex backend or platform projects with real production impact - Ability to turn ambiguous product goals into clear, executable technical direction - Strong systems design instincts: distributed systems, databases, APIs, queues, asynchronous workflows, and observability - Experience integrating AI tools into workflow and experimenting with unconventional solutions - Ability to elevate engineers around you while staying close to the code - High agency, strong ownership, and ability to prioritize what matters PREFERRED: - Experience with platform, infrastructure, or workflow systems at scale - Experience building agentic products or agent-based workflows - Experience integrating LLMs or AI models into production backend systems - Background in event-driven architectures, workflow engines, observability, or runtime reliability - Prior experience in healthcare operations or revenue cycle management
