B12 is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their ~10-person product team as their first staff-level hire. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on full-stack development with deep backend and infrastructure expertise.
In this role, you will own the delivery of major quarterly projects (1-2 per quarter), both shipping code individually and mentoring team members through planning, prototyping, and implementation phases. You'll participate in quarterly planning to identify key initiatives, respond to incidents and drive infrastructure improvements, optimize systems for cost and performance, collaborate with designers and product managers on early-stage designs, support operational teams on data analysis, and lead brainstorms on engineering effectiveness and quality.
B12's engineering philosophy emphasizes software as craft with a mission to improve the world. The team publishes research on expertise and knowledge work, maintains strong open-source contributions, and has published papers on forming expert flash teams and machine-mediated worker hierarchies.
Tech stack: Python/Django and TypeScript/React on the frontend; Amazon S3, EC2, Docker, and Elastic Beanstalk for infrastructure; PostgreSQL for structured data; Amazon Redshift for data warehousing; LLM-generated code with rigorous quality controls; near-full backend test coverage with ongoing frontend/integration test improvements; continuous integration and deployment.
The team values longevity of engineers over specific tools, mentorship both internally and externally, and moving fast while maintaining point-in-time recovery capabilities. You'll work alongside a designer, product manager, and CTO.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience building products and systems in production
- Strong backend and infrastructure background with demonstrated interest in using those skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Comfortable managing time and prioritizing among competing demands
- Curious, high-ownership mentality

- Comfortable with both backend and frontend technologies, with deeper expertise on backend/infrastructure side
