Glyphic Biotechnologies is developing a massively parallel, single-molecule proteome sequencing platform (ProSE) to transform life science discovery. The company has raised over $80M in venture funding and non-dilutive grants.
You will join the Assay Development team as a Staff or Senior Scientist, reporting to the Director of Assay Development. This is a hands-on research role focused on establishing novel assay workflows, defining component requirements (beads, surface chemistries, sample prep), and developing proxy assays that predict multi-cycle ProSE performance without full end-to-end runs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, plan, and execute experiments to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of the ProSE process
- Establish novel assay workflows and determine requirements for new components
- Develop proxy assays that isolate variables and accelerate integrated solutions
- Propose and test novel analytical approaches to optimize sample preparation, molecular expansion chemistry, automation, and end-to-end integration
- Correlate assay findings to physical system characteristics using multimodal characterization
- Connect assay outcomes and mechanistic understanding to new component requirements
- Identify and communicate experimental risks or resource gaps
- Partner with Assay Development peers and collaborate across Chemistry, Integration, Automation, and Bioinformatics teams
- Collect, manage, and analyze molecular biology and protein sequencing data
- Maintain detailed electronic lab notebooks and communicate results regularly
You will work at the interface of molecular biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, and automation. The ideal candidate connects assay outcomes to underlying physical and chemical mechanisms and translates insights into clear component requirements. This role offers the opportunity to shape how the ProSE platform evolves, replacing slow empirical testing with predictive, mechanistically grounded assays.
The position is full-time, exempt, and in-person at the Berkeley, CA location.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Post-graduate experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related fields with:
- For Staff Scientist: BS/MS/PhD with 10+/8+/6+ years of experience respectively
- For Senior Scientist: BS/MS/PhD with 8+/6+/4+ years of experience respectively
- Track record of establishing novel assay workflows for highly sensitive molecular assays (e.g., PCR-free sequencing, single-cell assays) with clear evidence of ownership and innovation
- Hands-on history of defining new component requirements (beads, oligos, chemical handles, surface properties, molecular biology reagents) and translating assay results into specifications
- Demonstrated ability to design simple, mechanistically defined test systems that isolate variables and pinpoint performance drivers
- Comprehensive understanding of molecular biology tools for high-sensitivity applications
- Strong foundation in nucleic acid and peptide chemistry, including knowledge of common damage sources (oxidation, depurination, hydrolysis) and mitigation methods
- Fluency in multimodal characterization (fluorescence, flow cytometry, zeta potential, bead/surface metrology) and linking physical measurements to assay performance
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication with ability to collaborate across diverse scientific and technical backgrounds
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments with evolving priorities
Nice to have:
- Hands-on experience with nanopore or other single-molecule detection platforms
- Experience with statistical analysis of mixed-effects and replicated data
- Experience with LC-MS and HPLC for biomolecule characterization
- Experience with bead-based automation (KingFisher, Hamilton)
- Familiarity with accelerated or repeated-exposure stability testing
- Familiarity with emerging trends in proteomic measurements
