Nautilus Biotechnology is developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform designed to democratize access to the proteome and accelerate drug development and precision medicine. The company is building a new sample preparation workflow for its proteomics platform. In this role, you will lead the protein handling and bioconjugation side of the sample preparation effort. You'll own the library prep workflow end to end—from initial strategy and experiments through development of a robust, documented protocol that other team members can execute. You'll work at the center of a cross-functional team spanning assay development, probe development, and bioinformatics. Key responsibilities include: - Owning the proteomics sample preparation workflow from strategy through protocol documentation - Leading development of bioconjugation strategies to label and immobilize proteins while preserving protein integrity - Building comprehensive characterization methods to validate conjugation, protein integrity, aggregation, and recovery at each step - Setting quality metrics and acceptance criteria for prepared protein sample libraries, and making go/no-go decisions based on data - Designing complex, multi-factor experiments that provide decisive direction for the program - Driving root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions when workflows fail - Partnering with assay, probe development, and bioinformatics teams to integrate library prep into the full workflow - Presenting plans, results, and recommendations to the team and R&D leadership - Setting technical direction for library prep, mentoring scientists and associates, and weighing in on program-level tradeoffs You'll be joining a team of curious, detail-oriented scientists committed to doing great science through diligence and learning from trials and mistakes. Requirements: - PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, chemical biology, bioengineering, or related field with 10+ years of industry experience; OR BS/MS with 15+ years in a related field - Deep hands-on expertise in handling, purifying, and stabilizing proteins - Demonstrated innovation record in protein bioconjugation (site-selective labeling, click chemistry, crosslinkers, surface immobilization) - Expert-level proficiency in protein characterization techniques: mass spectrometry, SEC, DLS, CD, SDS-PAGE/native PAGE, and activity or binding assays - Proven ability to take a workflow from concept to a robust, reproducible protocol used by other teams - Exceptional experimental design and data analysis skills, including multi-factor experiments - Track record of leading cross-functional technical work and influencing without formal authority - Experience mentoring scientists and setting technical direction for a team Preferred qualifications: - Background in sequencing, proteomics, or single-molecule library prep - Experience with automation or liquid handling for sample prep - Startup or early-stage product development experience
