hyperexponential is an AI-powered insurance platform backed by a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures. The company enables critical risk and pricing decisions for the world's largest insurers, with nearly 50 major clients and zero churn. The platform spans pricing, underwriting, and model authoring, with AI at its core—including a domain-specific AI peer programmer for actuarial science.
The Model Authoring team owns the products actuaries use to write and manage pricing models, from Excel-based raters through Python models that are reviewed, approved, and deployed to price live business. The team is distributed across Warsaw and London offices.
As Staff Product Engineer, you are an individual contributor responsible for setting technical direction and raising the bar across the team. This is a hands-on role with significant influence: you will establish engineering standards documented and enforced in code review; own technical direction for shared enablers (model representation, persistence, registry, secure context access, agentic infrastructure); define technical interfaces between Model Authoring and other teams; work directly on the highest-risk problems in the codebase; help define how the team operates in an AI-native way (deciding what to delegate to agents, what stays human, and what evidence is needed to trust either); and visibly mentor engineers across pods, with measurable impact on their growth.
You will move fast, shape technical conversations early, and navigate genuine ambiguity without waiting for established playbooks. The role requires comfort with distributed collaboration across Warsaw and London, and a genuine partnership with product and commercial teams to connect technical decisions to user outcomes and business impact.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience working in an AI-native environment; you have used AI or agentic tools in your own engineering workflow, introduced or experimented with them, and have a real, grounded view on what has worked and what hasn't.
- Product-focused mindset: you understand your users, their pain points, and how technical decisions connect to commercial outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical direction while navigating ambiguity; proven track record of owning architecture in a domain with no established playbook and making clear calls on imperfect information.
- Owned a significant technical challenge or service end-to-end, with depth to discuss trade-offs, contracts, and lessons learned.
- Proven influence across teams: you can hold a position under challenge, listen genuinely to pushback, and persuade others through reasoning, not just presentation.
- Effective collaboration across distributed teams; comfort building relationships and influence across multiple offices.
NICE TO HAVE:
- Developer experience work, including building tools for developers or actuaries (internal DX initiatives count).
