Develop Health is building AI-powered solutions to accelerate access to life-saving medications by automating complex healthcare processes like benefit verification and prior authorization. The company has already helped over 2.5 million patients and is scaling rapidly after a major funding round, partnering with major pharmacy benefit managers and payers.
As Staff Product Engineer, you'll own the technical direction of major product areas and drive both hands-on engineering and architectural decisions. In your first 3–6 months, you'll work directly with users to translate ambiguous healthcare problems into simple, reliable solutions. You'll lead complex product initiatives from discovery through launch, defining technical approaches and building critical components across backend services, user interfaces, data models, integrations, and workflow infrastructure. You'll make architectural decisions that balance delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability, and you'll build testing, observability, safe rollouts, and AI fallbacks into every product.
Beyond 6 months, you'll own the technical direction and customer outcomes of major product areas, solve cross-product technical problems, build shared services to accelerate future shipping, and shape the roadmap using customer evidence and operational data. You'll also develop AI-native tools and engineering processes that help the entire team work effectively with coding agents at every stage—planning, implementation, review, testing, and production.
You'll work closely with Product, AI, and Operations teams to remove obstacles between prescriptions and treatment. You'll raise the bar for the engineering team through your technical decisions and by sharing AI-native tools and practices that multiply team productivity.
The role requires hands-on execution: you'll ship across multiple layers of the stack, debug and operate software in production, and mentor other engineers while building processes that remove recurring blockers.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Hands-on ability to build, debug, and operate software across backend services, data, and user interfaces
- Strong architectural judgment: ability to define clear system boundaries and weigh delivery speed, reliability, and maintainability
- Product sense: direct user engagement to identify problems worth solving and define success metrics
- AI-native execution: proficiency using coding agents to multiply productivity while maintaining judgment and verification for reliable shipping
- Technical leadership: demonstrated ability to lead complex projects hands-on, align collaborators and stakeholders, and make other engineers more effective
- Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building AI-powered or automation-heavy products in production
- Healthcare domain experience (clinical workflows, EHRs, payers, pharmacies, or regulated industries)
- Early-stage startup experience or demonstrated ability to thrive with high ownership and limited structure
- Experience building workflow products, data-heavy interfaces, or third-party integrations
