Vitalize is building an AI operating system for how health systems manage labor and capacity. The company has raised $31M+ from top healthcare and technology investors and is trusted by leading health systems across the country. You'll be the third product designer at Vitalize, joining at a critical stage where you'll help define both what the company builds and how it designs. You'll set design direction for the most complex and strategic product areas, partnering closely with product and engineering leadership to transform ambiguous, high-stakes problems into clear, intuitive experiences. A core focus is establishing an AI-first design process. While Vitalize has started using AI for exploration and prototyping, the team lacks consistent workflows and best practices. You'll define what an AI-first design process looks like: how to use AI to explore more ideas, prototype faster, and reach real customer feedback sooner without compromising craft. You'll also shape how AI appears in the product itself, design across data-dense AI-powered workflows, lead the evolution of the design system, and maintain a consistently high bar as Vitalize scales. Key responsibilities include: - Building the AI-first design workflow: determine how AI fits into every stage of the design process from exploration through production, and set best practices and quality standards the team adopts - Leading by example: use AI daily to explore, prototype, and test ideas quickly, bringing the strongest directions to production quality - Setting design direction across the product: lead design for complex, cross-cutting product areas from discovery through launch, and shape long-term product vision with Product and Engineering leadership - Designing complex, workflow-heavy experiences: make data-dense operational tools intuitive for central staffing teams, unit managers, and frontline clinicians - Shaping how AI shows up in the product: decide where AI meaningfully improves workflows and how its recommendations, reasoning, and actions appear so users can trust and act on them - Working directly with customers: visit hospitals, observe real workflows, lead research, and translate insights into product decisions and strategy - Influencing the roadmap: question underlying workflows, find opportunities beyond immediate requests, and connect design decisions to customer and business outcomes - Raising the bar for the team: mentor other designers, lead critique, and build practices and rituals that help a small design team do exceptional work The design team is grounded in deep understanding of healthcare systems and the people who power them. The team spends time in hospitals, learns how work happens from frontline to C-suite, and uses those insights to design products that make complex operational decisions easier. Design at Vitalize prioritizes getting the workflow right before perfecting the interface. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of product design experience, including significant time designing complex, workflow-heavy B2B SaaS products - Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of high-impact, ambiguous problems from problem definition through shipped product with measurable outcomes - An AI-first design workflow you can teach: AI is central to how you design, with clear perspective on where it speeds up the process, where it falls short, and how to maintain quality - Experience designing AI-powered products: shipped experiences where AI makes recommendations or takes action, with thoughtful approach to trust, transparency, and human-in-the-loop decisions - Exceptional product instincts and craft: look beyond immediate UI, challenge whether workflows are right, turn complicated systems into experiences that feel simple - Strategic influence: set direction rather than respond to requests, align product/engineering/leadership around design vision backed by evidence - Customer- and outcomes-oriented mindset: comfortable observing operational workflows in hospitals firsthand, connect work to measurable impact for customers and business - Design systems leadership: built or led evolution of a design system, know how to balance consistency with speed of early-stage company - Multiplier on the team: mentored designers, raised craft bar through critique, shaped how design teams work, excited to stay hands-on while building the function
