CesiumAstro is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design efforts across all phases of product development for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. This is a hands-on role in a dynamic startup environment focused on pioneering communication systems for space applications.
In this position, you will own mechanical design from initial concept through requirements definition, detailed design, simulation, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support. You will be responsible for developing and optimizing mechanical designs using thermal management, precision machining principles, thermal and structural simulation, shock and vibration analysis, EMI/EMC mitigation, and cost optimization techniques. As a staff-level engineer, you will serve as a technical and professional mentor to other team members.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading mechanical design of electronics packaging for high-power and high-density assemblies
- Conducting finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal simulations to validate designs
- Performing shock, vibration, and stress dynamics analysis
- Applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and aerospace drawing standards
- Presenting engineering design review materials to customers and executive leadership
- Participating in proposal-writing efforts
- Mentoring junior engineers in mechanical design and analysis
You will work in a cross-functional environment with opportunities to engage across the organization on leading-edge aerospace hardware development.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution
- 8+ years of industry experience in design and analysis of electronics packaging, including thermal, vibration, and stress dynamics
- Demonstrated expertise in packaging high-power and high-density electronic assemblies
- Strong understanding of thermal management techniques for spaceborne and/or high-power electronics
- Experience designing hardware for launch and spaceflight environments (or similar)
- Expert-level proficiency with FEA and thermal simulation tools (Ansys or similar)
- Expert-level proficiency with professional mechanical CAD tools (SolidWorks or similar)
- Experience with precision machining, advanced manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis
- Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques
- Strong understanding of GD&T and aerospace drawing practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status (required by U.S. Government Space Technology Export Regulations)
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience packaging digital, power, or RF printed circuit board assemblies
- Experience with spacecraft payloads, avionics, or power systems
- Knowledge of NASA, DoD, ESA, or commercial space qualification standards
- Experience with thermal vacuum testing and spacecraft environmental qualification
- Familiarity with materials selection for radiation and outgassing environments
