Shield AI, a venture-backed defense-tech company, is seeking a Staff Infrastructure Engineer to serve as a senior technical resource on the Cloud & Infrastructure team. You will design and implement solutions for complex infrastructure requirements supporting business, engineering, and mission-critical workloads across multiple offices, data centers, and colocation facilities worldwide.
Key responsibilities include:
**Systems Engineering:** Design, deploy, administer, and optimize Active Directory and core identity infrastructure (domain services, Group Policy, DNS, authentication, replication, cloud integration). Engineer and operate enterprise compute, virtualization, and storage infrastructure. Design and optimize enterprise storage platforms with capacity planning, performance tuning, data protection, and lifecycle management. Support compute platforms across data centers, offices, and hybrid cloud environments, including virtualization, GPU-accelerated infrastructure, VDI, and specialized engineering workloads. Perform capacity planning and infrastructure sizing for new workloads and site expansions.
**Resiliency, Operations & Automation:** Design and continuously improve backup, disaster recovery, and infrastructure resiliency with recovery architecture, replication, RTO/RPO planning, and disaster recovery testing. Implement monitoring and observability for infrastructure availability, capacity, performance, and reliability. Develop infrastructure automation using Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar technologies. Support hybrid on-premises and AWS/Azure integration, including containerized and Kubernetes-based infrastructure. Troubleshoot complex infrastructure incidents and serve as escalation point for critical production issues. Participate in on-call and emergency response activities.
**Technical Leadership & Collaboration:** Partner with Cybersecurity on infrastructure hardening, vulnerability remediation, and compliance. Collaborate with Network Engineering on connectivity and dependencies. Lead infrastructure projects from design through implementation. Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance while remaining hands-on. Develop and maintain infrastructure standards, architecture documentation, and operational procedures.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years of experience engineering and supporting enterprise infrastructure in production environments
- Advanced experience administering and engineering Microsoft Active Directory (AD DS, Group Policy, DNS, authentication, replication)
- Strong experience with enterprise compute, virtualization, and storage platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, NetApp, Pure Storage, Dell EMC, or equivalent)
- Strong Windows Server administration experience and working proficiency with Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu)
- Experience designing and implementing backup, replication, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions with RTO/RPO planning and testing
- Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management (Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar)
- Experience supporting hybrid infrastructure across on-premises and AWS/Azure
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives, establish engineering standards, troubleshoot ambiguous problems, and mentor engineers
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
**Preferred qualifications:**
- Experience in high-availability, mission-critical, manufacturing, aerospace, defense, or engineering environments
- Deep experience with enterprise storage and data protection ecosystems (NetApp, Pure Storage, Dell EMC, or equivalent)
- Experience designing infrastructure across multiple offices, engineering sites, laboratories, and data center/colocation environments
- Kubernetes or containerized workloads experience
- GPU compute, high-performance computing, or accelerated engineering workloads support
- VDI platform experience (VMware Horizon, Citrix, Azure Virtual Desktop, or equivalent)
- Strong infrastructure networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, VLANs, firewalls)
- Experience in security-conscious or regulated environments with NIST or CMMC framework alignment
- Relevant technical certifications (VMware VCP, Microsoft, NetApp, AWS, Azure, or equivalent)
