Capella, an IonQ company, is seeking a Staff Electrical Harness Design Engineer to take ownership of full-cycle harness designs for space systems, from early concept through flight readiness. You will work cross-functionally with systems, manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, and RF teams to deliver high-reliability, space-ready harnesses. As a staff-level engineer, you will guide the harness team on specialized topics, present across disciplines to facilitate product readiness, and conduct design reviews.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design system-level harnesses spanning power distribution to high-speed communications
- Own the complete harness design lifecycle and implement best practices
- Collaborate across mechanical, RF, electrical, and systems teams to ensure seamless integration
- Serve as the technical point of contact for wire, cable, connector, and harness suppliers
- Support resolution of non-conformances from harness suppliers
- Provide critical input to schedule planning, hardware requirements, and process improvements
- Define test plans and verification strategies meeting flight readiness requirements
Success in this role means consistently delivering flight-quality harnesses on schedule with minimal oversight, proactively identifying and articulating system-level risks with early mitigations, communicating confidently across hardware/software and cross-functional boundaries, making thoughtful trade-offs in constrained environments backed by data, showing curiosity about advanced areas like architecture optimization or radiation mitigation, and demonstrating advanced wide-ranging experience in harness engineering.
The role is based onsite at the Louisville, CO office with the option to work a few days remotely. Travel is up to 10% domestic or international.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience/combined education)
- 5+ years' experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting complex harnesses
- Experience designing and maintaining systems from beginning to end of product lifecycle
- Knowledge of PCBAs and working closely with electrical design engineers to define harnessing requirements and inform board-level design decisions
- Understanding of RF cabling, components, and testing
- Excellent organizational skills and strong documentation habits
- Strong knowledge of industry harnessing standards (NASA-STD-8739.4, IPC/WHMA-A-620, etc.)
- Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD applications
- Strong knowledge of Zuken or other harness design applications
- Experience with engineering product lifecycle management tools
- Strong knowledge of cable assembly design
- Understanding of Electro Magnetic Effects (EME), including Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI)
