Lightship is the first American all-electric recreational vehicle manufacturer developing aerodynamic, battery-powered trailers for the electric age. This Staff Harness Design Engineer role is a technical leadership position focused on the complete design and validation of vehicle wire harnesses for electric RVs.
You will own product design for vehicle wire harnesses spanning signal wiring, solar systems, AC and DC appliance power, and vehicle sensor/component/controller wiring. Key responsibilities include maintaining the full vehicle wiring diagram in collaboration with power systems and vehicle engineering teams, managing high-voltage harness routing and design for drive systems, power distribution, and HVAC, and owning device transmittal documentation as the interface between device owners, controls, and the harnessing team.
You will work with power systems and vehicle teams to package wire harness components on both interior and exterior of the RV cabin, conduct detailed mechanical analysis of subsystems to ensure functional and durability requirements are met, and perform Design Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to establish reliability and mitigate safety issues. Component selection responsibilities include choosing off-the-shelf components (connectors, terminals, wire, loom, shields, etc.) with focus on cost, quality, and supply chain robustness, and working directly with vendors on sourcing.
You will support functional prototyping of subsystems to de-risk designs early, collaborate with the test engineering team to develop DVP&R testing and troubleshoot vehicle-level test failures, and provide technical mentorship and guidance to a growing team of mechanical engineers. This is a hands-on technical role with significant scope and mentorship responsibilities in a flat organizational structure.
REQUIREMENTS:
- B.S. or higher degree in engineering field, preferably Mechanical Engineering
- 7+ years of mechanical or electrical engineering design experience with direct experience specifying, designing, and validating wire harnesses
- Experience with CAD/PLM/PDM systems
- Experience with rapid iteration cycles
- General harness sizing & provisioning
- Creating 3D CAD and 2D drawings for harness routing
- Creating design validation plans for electrical hardware & mechanical assemblies
PREFERRED:
- EV/HV routing experience
- Boat, AG, RV, automotive, or transportation industry (truck/bus/rail) experience
- Siemens Capital or Catia experience
- Harness prototyping experience
