ARX Robotics, a European defense-tech company specializing in autonomous unmanned systems and sensors, is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to provide technical leadership in developing safety- and security-critical embedded systems for defense products.
In this hands-on technical role, you will own the foundational architecture, design, and implementation of real-time embedded firmware across the full product-development lifecycle—from requirements and design through integration, verification, and qualification. You will set engineering direction, resolve complex embedded-systems problems, and act as a trusted technical authority across firmware, hardware, systems, test, and security disciplines.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and evolve safety- and security-critical bare-metal and RTOS-based firmware components, including device drivers, hardware-abstraction layers, BSPs, and bootloaders
- Translate complex system, safety, and security requirements into verifiable firmware designs with full V-model traceability
- Design and implement secure-update mechanisms and integrate hardware-security features (HSMs, PKI, anti-tamper mechanisms) aligned with zero-trust principles
- Build highly testable, deterministic firmware that operates consistently across target hardware, SIL, and HIL simulation environments
- Investigate and resolve complex hardware-software integration faults using systematic debugging, schematics, JTAG probes, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentor cross-functional teams, and set engineering direction across disciplines
The company operates in a dynamic, mission-driven environment focused on autonomous systems for challenging environments, supporting NATO Armies and civilian first responders.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of professional experience developing bare-metal and RTOS-based firmware for safety- or security-critical real-time systems in regulated sectors (defense, aerospace, marine)
- Deep expertise in low-level embedded systems (interrupts, scheduling, determinism, fault tolerance) with strong C and Modern C++ programming skills; Python for automation
- Proven ability to debug complex hardware-software integration issues using test equipment and protocol analyzers; familiarity with platforms like Infineon AURIX or ARM Cortex
- Practical experience across full development lifecycle: safety-certified toolchains, static analysis, automated CI, firmware testing, objective verification evidence
- Proactive, evidence-driven mindset; ability to act as trusted Staff-level technical authority and communicate complex trade-offs across multidisciplinary teams
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline
- Professional fluency in English (must-have); German language proficiency is a strong plus
Note: The posting states candidates do not need to meet every requirement to apply and welcomes motivated candidates eager to grow into the role.
