Flexport is a global commerce platform that moves over $19B of merchandise across 112 countries annually. The company is transforming the $10T logistics and supply chain industry through innovative technology.
You will join the Platform, Security & Infrastructure (PSI) team as a Staff Engineer responsible for owning and evolving the developer platform that powers Flexport's engineering organization. This is a high-leverage role where you'll directly impact hundreds of engineers and thousands of daily deployments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and ship paved paths and self-serve tooling that make best practices the easy default, protected by guardrails rather than restrictive gates
- Own CI/CD pipelines (Buildkit, Github Actions), build tooling (Gradle, Bazel, npm/pnpm/bun, Go, Cargo), and artifact repositories (Artifactory, ECR, GitHub)
- Improve backend and frontend developer experience across the organization
- Steward the GraphQL and gRPC ecosystem, ensuring middleware, federation, schema sharing, CLIs, codegen, and servers/clients work seamlessly
- Evolve and integrate IAM solutions and primitives to make security easy and default
- Ensure engineers can easily use, understand, and debug container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS) and observability stacks (Openmetrics, Datadog)
- Conduct user research with developers through shadowing, interviews, and DevX metrics tracking to ground decisions in data
- Cross organizational boundaries to align with product teams and ship platform-wide changes
- Actively identify friction points and design solutions without waiting for tickets
You'll work in a hybrid model, coming to the Amsterdam office 3 days per week for collaboration and shipping. The company provides latest hardware/software and frontier AI models.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant time building developer platforms, internal tooling, or core infrastructure that other engineers depend on
- Deep full-stack instincts: equally comfortable in backend services, frontend build pipelines, Kubernetes manifests, and CI configurations
- Strong product instincts applied to internal users: treat engineers as customers, identify what's worth building, measure impact
- Hands-on expertise with at least one of each: CI/CD system (Github Actions preferred), container orchestrator (Kubernetes preferred), build tooling for multiple languages, backend-for-frontend (GraphQL preferred), service-to-service communication (gRPC preferred), metrics and artifact storage
- Appetite for fixing brownfield infrastructure: thrive on addressing what's broken and building bridges to what's next; execute migrations yourself or make them feel effortless
- Independent mindset: thrive in ambiguity, find highest-leverage problems yourself, don't wait to be told what to do
- Excellent communication: run developer interviews, write clear design docs, align stakeholders across teams
- Generally helpful attitude: known as the person who unblocks others, points them in the right direction, makes their work easier
- Drive for impact: not satisfied until every engineer is productive and confident
Nice to Have:
- Experience in data-driven DevX development using metrics such as DORA
- AWS experience
- Identity and Access Management (IAM) at scale (JWTs, OIDC, fine-grained authorization)
- Terraform experience
