Salary: GBP 124,400 - 165,000 / annual

This is a senior individual contributor role for a Staff Data Scientist who will lead strategically important, business-critical data science initiatives across Monzo's organization. You will combine deep technical expertise with strong commercial judgment to tackle the company's most complex challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shape and lead data strategy for large domains or collectives, connecting customer and commercial goals to high-impact data science work
- Identify, frame, and lead strategically important problems where the path is ambiguous and decisions involve meaningful trade-offs
- Partner with senior leaders across product, engineering, ML, design, research, risk, and operations, bringing independent technical perspective that influences strategy
- Establish measurement strategies and metric maps that clarify how customer behavior, product changes, and business outcomes connect
- Set and evolve best practices for experimentation, causal inference, forecasting, optimization, and decision science
- Remain hands-on in areas where expertise is most valuable: exploring complex data, designing analyses and experiments, building models and prototypes
- Steward critical data products and initiatives end-to-end, ensuring robustness, governance, documentation, and adoption
- Balance pace and analytical rigor, making pragmatic trade-offs while protecting quality and reproducibility
- Raise data science standards across Monzo through technical direction, proposals, reviews, and reusable methods
- Coach and mentor data scientists and analytics engineers to build sustainable capability
Monzo's data science team is expanding across multiple domains: Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Fincrime, Wealth, and Core. The company has a strong culture of data-driven decision-making, with 90% of day-to-day decisions covered by self-serve analytics through Looker, freeing data scientists to focus on high-impact business questions.
Requirements:
- Exceptional track record of leading complex, business-critical data science work from ambiguous problem framing through measurable outcomes
- Experience shaping strategy across large product or business domains and influencing senior leaders through clear, independent judgment
- Deep expertise across multiple data science disciplines with ability to set technical direction for work involving significant complexity, uncertainty, or risk
- Demonstrated ability to create clarity across organizational boundaries, resolve difficult dependencies, and turn long-term strategy into decisive action
- Strong communication skills for complex ideas, assumptions, and risks; consistently high bar for analytical quality, governance, and reproducibility
- Highly credible hands-on practitioner with SQL and Python while raising standards and multiplying impact of experienced colleagues
