Jane App is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to build and own the customer data infrastructure for a fast-growing healthcare SaaS platform used by thousands of clinics and hundreds of thousands of practitioners daily. This is a founding engineering role within a new team dedicated to customer signals and instrumentation. You will own the end-to-end collection and delivery layer, event pipelines, CDP tooling, and source integrations. Your scope includes schema governance, source management, instrumentation standards and infrastructure, identity resolution, attribution capture, and a lightweight review process for new events. You'll assess the current infrastructure (which has been built incrementally across teams without dedicated ownership), define the strategic direction, and build the systems and standards to support Jane's growth. Key responsibilities: - Own both strategy and execution: set architectural direction, evaluate tooling, define data collection strategy, and build the systems that make it real. - Build and maintain Jane's customer data infrastructure end-to-end, bringing consistency and reliability to multiple independently configured sources with different conventions. - Work cross-functionally with marketing, paid media, analytics, marketing operations, BI, and product on attribution, campaign tracking, conversion data, and warehouse integrations. - Drive tooling strategy for the collection layer, including CDP and event pipeline infrastructure. Jane currently runs RudderStack and is evaluating long-term stack options. - Establish instrumentation standards across engineering, product, and marketing, defining how events are structured, named, versioned, and validated. - Own identity resolution and attribution at the collection layer, stitching together customer journeys across multiple channels, domains, and touchpoints (marketing pages, landing pages, signup applications) to ensure trustworthy funnel data. - Navigate consent-gated instrumentation within healthcare compliance constraints, including PHI requirements, consent management, tag management, and third-party marketing tools. Jane is a founder-led, high-growth SaaS company with a remote-first team across Canada, the US, and the UK. The company serves 70,000+ businesses with 250,000+ practitioners using the platform daily. REQUIREMENTS: - University degree in Computer Science or related STEM field plus hands-on experience as a data engineer or similar, operating at staff level or higher. Depth and judgment matter more than years of experience. - Proven track record building and maintaining event collection, customer data infrastructure, or data pipeline systems in production. - Experience inheriting and rationalizing independently built pipelines, not just building from scratch. - Ability to lead and own both strategy and execution: making architectural calls, setting standards that teams follow, and driving strategy across engineering, product, BI, marketing, and leadership. - Experience evaluating or implementing Customer Data Platforms, including migrating or consolidating existing tooling. Greenfield-only experience is insufficient. - Experience with privacy-compliant tracking and consent management, including consent management platforms, understanding how consent state affects data collection, and designing instrumentation within those constraints. Healthcare or other regulated environment experience is a plus. - Strong opinions on schema design, event taxonomy, and data quality. You understand the consequences of poor instrumentation and care about getting it right. - Experience with identity resolution, attribution, or cross-domain tracking, understanding the complexities of stitching user journeys across systems. - Proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript and SQL (required). Python is a strong asset. Familiarity with Snowflake, Looker, or similar warehouse and BI tooling is helpful. - Comfort working with AI tools as part of day-to-day workflow. The posting notes: "If you don't meet every single qualification but are excited about this role, we'd still love to hear from you."
