Salary: USD 170,000 - 200,000 / annual
Cellanome is a well-funded biotech startup tackling major challenges in biology through next-generation technologies. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Cloud, you will design, develop, and deploy cloud platform capabilities that bring the company's revolutionary technology to life.
In this Staff Cloud Engineer role, you'll be a technical leader shaping how the team builds with AI coding agents. You'll establish patterns, guardrails, and review standards that enable a small team to ship at the pace of a much larger organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partner with the Computational Biology team to translate scientific workflows into scalable cloud-based solutions
- Understand client needs and provide tailored solutions aligned with their objectives
- Collaborate across R&D, product development, regulatory, and marketing teams
- Design, implement, and maintain cloud software systems using AWS, TypeScript, and AI-assisted development tools
- Lead the team's adoption of AI coding agents by defining workflows, guardrails, and review standards for quality, security, and compliance
- Serve as a key reviewer of designs and code changes, including AI-generated code, maintaining high standards for correctness, security, and maintainability
- Optimize data pipelines, storage, and computational workflows for performance, cost, and reliability
- Develop and document APIs and interfaces for seamless tool integration
- Monitor and troubleshoot cloud infrastructure for high availability and security
- Stay current with advancements in cloud technologies, AI-assisted development, and computational biology tools
This is an in-office role based at either the Foster City or San Diego site.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience with a Bachelor's degree (or 6 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent work experience). Must have:
- In-depth experience with full software development life cycle (coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, operations)
- Strong test-driven API development using TypeScript, with ability to use tests and specifications to guide and verify AI-generated code
- Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants or agents (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, etc.) in professional development, with sound judgment on when to trust, verify, or reject output
- Proven ability to lead design or architecture work (design patterns, reliability, scaling)
- Experience building cloud technology using AWS; familiarity with Azure and GCP preferred
- Experience with large-scale systems data analysis, visualization tools, and/or debugging
- Ability to work in startup environments at various growth stages
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Preferred: Early-stage company experience, previous technical leadership role, experience building LLM-powered features or agent integrations, pharmaceutical or biotech industry background, experience as end-user of related instrumentation.
