Form Energy is seeking a Staff Characterization Chemist to lead the development and deployment of advanced characterization methods for our iron-air battery systems. This role is part of the characterization team and sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and manufacturing scale-up. You will own and develop characterization services across multiple domains including wet chemistry, elemental identification (ICP-OES, MS), and spectroscopy techniques (TGA/DSC, vibrational spectroscopy). Working closely with engineering teams across the company, you will identify critical open questions about battery performance and durability, then design and validate characterization approaches to answer them. You will also manage a team of technicians, overseeing their daily workflows, instrument maintenance, vendor relationships, and data quality standards. As a technical leader, you will act as an ambassador for characterization capabilities, helping colleagues understand how analytical methods can solve their problems. You'll collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to ensure characterization supports rapid iteration and scaling of our production facility in West Virginia. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree plus 7–10 years of related work experience; OR Master's degree plus multiple years of work experience; OR PhD with some work experience - Expertise in the majority of: ICP-OES and/or MS, titration and related wet chemistry techniques, thermomechanical techniques (TGA/DSC), and vibrational spectroscopy - Demonstrated ability to define and solve complex problems with limited background data - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams in a service-based environment - Preferred: demonstrated ability to manage technicians' workflows with high standards and high empathy
