Scribe is a specialized intelligence platform used by 94% of the Fortune 500 to capture and operationalize how teams work. The company automatically captures workflows and turns them into living assets that help people and AI agents perform at their best. Founded in 2019, Scribe has grown to 7 million users across 600,000 businesses, is valued at over $1 billion, and is backed by leading investors.
As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Recorder Engineering team, you will own the backend platform and observability systems that keep Scribe's Workflow Mapping capture and ingestion systems healthy at scale. You'll build systems that monitor hundreds of thousands of desktop app and browser extension installations worldwide, understand data capture reliability, identify fleet-wide problems, and ensure data flows dependably into processing and AI pipelines.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will shape the feature, reliability, and observability roadmap for the Workflow Mapping client platform. You'll establish meaningful measures of ingestion health and drive improvements across team boundaries. Primary work will be in Python, with TypeScript and Go as needed, partnering with engineers deploying services in AWS.
Key responsibilities include: building and evolving the monitoring and observability platform for hundreds of thousands of installations; defining and improving signals that measure recorder reliability and data capture health; owning and evolving backend ingestion services that connect data capture to processing and AI pipelines; improving background-job reliability and task orchestration; designing, deploying, and operating production services in AWS; setting technical direction and driving roadmaps in partnership with adjacent teams; and leading cross-team technical work to unblock engineers and maintain high architectural standards.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep experience building backend applications and a proven track record of owning complex production systems at Staff-level scope
- Strong Python skills; comfortable working across TypeScript and Go as needed
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems and large-scale data ingestion pipelines; understanding of tradeoffs between reliability, performance, and scale
- Experience building monitoring and observability systems that make production health measurable and help teams detect, diagnose, and resolve failures
- Confidence working with message queues, background jobs, and task orchestration tools (Celery, SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka)
- Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining production services in AWS
- Ability to turn ambiguous problems into technical roadmaps, align engineers across teams, and carry work from design through production operation
- Combination of hands-on engineering with technical leadership; pragmatic and maintainable code; ownership of system health
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience monitoring health and reliability of large fleets of desktop apps, browser extensions, or distributed clients
- Django experience
- Startup or fast-paced, high-growth environment experience
