Innovaccer is seeking a Staff Artificial Intelligence Engineer to join their healthcare intelligence platform team in San Francisco. This is a senior individual contributor role where you'll stay deeply involved in coding while operating at principal scope.
In this role, you will design and build the most complex, highest-impact components of Innovaccer's platform, including backend services, data pipelines, and AI/ML-powered healthcare features. You'll personally write production code, own complex systems end-to-end, and lead by example through hands-on technical work rather than management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and ship critical platform components (backend services, APIs, data pipelines) with high-quality production code
- Build AI/ML-powered product features end-to-end: integrating models, designing surrounding systems and data flows, and ensuring production reliability
- Own technical architecture for major systems, making hands-on design decisions for scalability, performance, security, and cost
- Lead by example on engineering best practices across the full software development lifecycle—code quality, testing, security, observability, and operational excellence
- Build resilient, well-tested services that integrate cleanly across products and with external healthcare systems
- Ensure compliance with healthcare and data-protection requirements (HIPAA, GDPR) by embedding security and compliance into implementation
- Debug, profile, and harden production systems; take ownership of reliability and incident response
- Provide hands-on technical mentorship to senior and staff engineers through design reviews, pairing, and code review
- Partner with product and clinical stakeholders to translate real-world healthcare needs into well-scoped, technically sound designs
- Evaluate and select technologies, frameworks, and tooling, balancing capability, cost, risk, and time-to-value
Innovaccer's Healthcare Intelligence Cloud helps providers, payers, and government organizations activate healthcare data and deliver intelligent, connected experiences. The platform integrates fragmented data into proactive, coordinated actions that improve care quality and operational performance.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with a strong track record of personally building and shipping large-scale production systems
- Deep, current, hands-on coding expertise in one or more modern languages (Python, Java, Go, or similar)—this role writes code daily
- Strong software design skills across distributed systems, backend services, APIs, and data-intensive architectures
- Experience building and integrating AI/ML into products: connecting models to real systems, handling data flows, and operationalizing them in production (research scientist background not required, but comfort building AI/ML-powered features is essential)
- Hands-on experience operating production systems: CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, performance tuning, and incident response
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7) and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, GDPR), or ability to ramp quickly on regulated domains
- Excellent problem-solving skills and strong communication; ability to align engineers and stakeholders around technical approaches
- Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
