Hims & Hers, a public healthtech company (NYSE: HIMS), is seeking a Senior Staff Platform Engineer to set technical direction for the platform organization. This is the most senior individual contributor role on the team, responsible for owning architecture on the company's most consequential, cross-organizational infrastructure initiatives. In this role, you will own group-critical platform initiatives as a single-threaded owner of multi-quarter, cross-org programs such as service mesh adoption across independent clusters and business units, multi-region resilience strategy, and foundational platform initiatives. You'll define architectural patterns, golden paths, and platform primitives (Istio mTLS/traffic policy, AI agent golden paths, MCP-backed service APIs) that other engineers implement against, creating shared components that improve delivery consistency across teams. You'll lead through hands-on technical excellence, staying deeply engaged in the hardest parts of the systems you own—debugging production incidents at the mesh layer, hardening migration tooling, resolving cross-team architectural conflicts—earning credibility through visible, high-quality technical work. You'll drive execution across organizational boundaries, coordinating rollouts that depend on multiple engineering orgs contributing resources on a schedule, and anticipating systemic blockers before they stall programs. Additional responsibilities include owning testing infrastructure strategy end-to-end, serving as DRI for how engineering teams validate changes before production; mentoring Staff and Senior engineers on system design and migration strategy; driving org-wide reduction of technical debt and cost through large-scale infrastructure consolidations and migrations; and establishing metrics that prove platform investment works by defining adoption rate, incident trends, cost trajectory, and developer sentiment. Recent flagship work at this level includes leading the Istio service mesh rollout as single-threaded owner across the entire organization, shaping the architecture behind the Multi-Region Resilience Program, and owning the technical direction of the AI-enriched Service Catalog. REQUIREMENTS: - 12+ years in Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles, including demonstrated ownership of at least one initiative that spanned multiple teams or business units - Deep, production-proven expertise in Kubernetes/EKS, service mesh (Istio strongly preferred—mTLS, traffic shaping, sidecar architecture, multi-cluster rollout), and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) at meaningful scale - Track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical programs from architecture through execution, including ability to produce cost/risk analysis and phased proposals that secure leadership buy-in and funding - Experience debugging and resolving production incidents in distributed, multi-hop systems (proxy/sidecar-layer failures, cross-service auth issues, environment-specific config drift) - Proficiency in at least one of Go, Python, TypeScript, or Java, with judgment to know when to write code yourself versus when to set direction and delegate - Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority—driving alignment across engineering orgs that don't report to you and building technical credibility that makes other senior engineers want to build on your patterns - Experience mentoring Staff-level engineers and shaping how a broader engineering org approaches system design PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Experience with AI-native platform tooling: agentic tooling, MCP-backed APIs and golden paths for deploying AI agents in production - Track record of driving large-scale cost or infrastructure consolidation initiatives (CI/CD platform migrations, cloud cost optimization, vendor consolidation) with measurable business impact - Experience with multi-region or high-availability architecture, including RPO/RTO planning and per-journey SLO definition - Comfortable authoring RFCs and leadership-facing technical proposals and presenting them directly to senior engineering leadership
