Velo3D is seeking a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and optimize optical and opto-mechanical systems for advanced manufacturing equipment. This role combines deep technical expertise in optical engineering with hands-on prototyping and system integration.
You will be responsible for designing and documenting optical and opto-mechanical components including laser beam delivery assemblies, scan lenses, galvanometer scan heads, beam combiners/splitters, and protective windows. You'll propose specifications, create comprehensive test plans, and conduct validation for optical and opto-mechanical designs. Your work will include maintaining and creating optical layout drawings, alignment and calibration procedures, and opto-mechanical schematics for current and future products.
Key responsibilities include managing suppliers for prototype and production optical and photonic components, supporting supply chain management for end-of-life and obsolescence of optical and laser components, and providing optical engineering expertise across hardware, software, process engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and field service teams. You will conduct system-level integration and validation of designs through testing and troubleshooting, drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance optical performance, reliability, and manufacturability, and ensure full documentation of designs including BOMs, drawings, and procedures.
You'll oversee and coordinate activities involved in fabrication, alignment, calibration, installation, and repair of optical and opto-mechanical systems. You'll manage small to mid-sized projects from concept through production and collaborate in a team environment with hardware, software, and process engineering colleagues.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or higher)
- 6+ years of experience in Optical or Opto-Mechanical Systems Design and Development
- Experience with optical design and analysis software (Zemax or CODE V)
- Proficiency with mechanical CAD, such as Solidworks
- Experience designing optical or laser systems for complex capital equipment in additive, semiconductor, or photonics industries
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, aligning, calibrating, or troubleshooting complex optical or laser systems
- Working knowledge of laser beam delivery hardware (beam expanders, scan lenses, galvanometer scanners, dynamic focusing units, beam combining/splitting optics)
- Strong opto-mechanical design skills including GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and quality detail drawing documentation
- Familiarity with laser safety standards (IEC 60825)
- Systems-level thinking with experience on complex optical and mechanical systems
- Ability to work hands-on to build, integrate, align, and test optical systems
- Self-driven, independent thinking, and ability to work independently
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Desired qualifications:
- Experience with multi-laser or multi-beam array systems
- Metal additive manufacturing experience
- High-power fiber laser systems and associated beam delivery hardware experience
- Risk analysis methods experience (FMEA, ISO 12100)
