Sanity.io is building an AI-powered Content Operating System used by companies like SKIMS, Figma, Riot Games, and Anthropic. The platform enables teams to model, create, and automate content operations at scale. You will lead the Billing & Integrations engineering team, responsible for usage metering, plans and subscriptions, spend controls, invoices, and partner integrations. This is a player-coach role where you balance people leadership with hands-on technical involvement. Key responsibilities: - Own the engineering roadmap for the monetization platform in partnership with Product, balancing new billing capabilities, customer-facing improvements, reliability, and operational efficiency - Guide the usage-to-invoice architecture including metering correctness, subscription lifecycle, reconciliation, and budget/limit enforcement - Transform billing requirements into documented APIs and self-service tools that other teams can operate independently - Develop engineers through clear feedback, meaningful ownership, and career support; hire as team needs evolve - Stay technically engaged through architecture reviews, code pairing, and hands-on work where it adds most value - Strengthen testing, observability, incident response, and safe migration practices - Partner across Product, Growth, Finance, RevOps, Support, and engineering teams to clarify requirements and surface trade-offs early - Maintain reliability of existing partner integrations and alignment with upstream API changes - Measure impact through billing accuracy, self-service adoption, commercial lead time, and operational health Requirements: - Based in Oslo, Norway or London, UK - Proven experience managing engineers and delivering software at a product or SaaS company with substantial hands-on engineering background - Experience leading backend or platform systems where correctness and reliability are critical - Experience in billing, payments, usage metering, subscriptions, or entitlements is especially valuable - Strong ability to communicate technical designs and trade-offs clearly with both engineers and non-technical partners - Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguity into clear priorities, deliver incrementally, and show how your team's work improved customer or business outcomes - Passion for growing people and building teams with shared ownership - Ability to work effectively across functions and timezones - Deep understanding of event-driven systems, API contracts, idempotency, retries, consistency, reconciliation, and safe changes to critical state - Familiarity with tools like Orb, Stripe, or Temporal is a plus; transferable engineering judgment is more important than specific vendor knowledge
