As Software Engineering Manager for Billing, you will lead Render's billing engineering team and own the systems that turn platform usage into accurate charges. Billing is mission-critical: every service, database, and workload running on Render ends up on an invoice, and customers depend on accuracy and transparency.
You will set multi-quarter strategy and own technical direction, people management, and execution for usage-based billing systems including usage capture, data pipelines, third-party billing platforms (Orb, Metronome, Stripe), and invoicing. You'll be Engineering's senior partner to Finance, Product, and Customer Experience, translating pricing, reporting, and customer needs into a roadmap your team executes.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead and grow the Billing engineering team, owning how usage is captured, flows through data pipelines, and lands as correct charges
- Own the roadmap for billing systems from usage metering through invoicing, reconciliation, and financial reporting
- Drive billing correctness and reliability through monitoring, reconciliation, and testing that catch errors before customers do
- Partner with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience to align roadmap with pricing, reporting, and customer needs
- Hire and develop engineers to support planned team growth while keeping focus clear as billing scope expands
- Make key architectural decisions balancing long-term platform investment against near-term pricing launches and fixes
- Build strong performance management and career development practices for a team including senior individual contributors
This role is for a seasoned technical leader who wants to build the organization, leaders, and systems that keep billing accurate as usage, pricing, and the customer base grow.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong people leadership (top priority)
- Hands-on enough to review code, prototype, and contribute directly when it helps the team
- Comfort operating in ambiguity with adaptability and growth mindset
- Proven experience building and scaling teams, ideally growing a group from a handful of engineers into a larger organization
- Experience managing engineers, including senior and staff engineers; hiring and performance management
- Hands-on experience with usage-based billing, payments, or other revenue-critical systems, including third-party platforms like Orb, Metronome, or Stripe
- Ability to partner closely with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience without needing to fill those functions yourself
- Strong business instincts with ability to connect engineering investment to billing accuracy, revenue, and customer trust
- Background from either a startup or larger company; what matters is experience and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment
NICE-TO-HAVES:
- Experience leading a billing platform migration or pricing model change
- Familiarity with financial reconciliation and reporting processes
- Background in distributed systems or event-driven architectures
- Experience building for developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, or DevTools
