ScyllaDB is a next-generation NoSQL database built for extreme throughput and predictable low latency at massive scale. The company operates with engineers across 15+ countries and maintains the highest standards of software engineering and performance optimization.
You will lead a small, exceptionally talented team of 4–6 engineers at the heart of the ScyllaDB server. This is a hands-on role where you spend approximately 50% of your time writing and reviewing code, and the other 50% helping your team do their best work. This is not a manager-who-used-to-code position; you remain deeply technical and performance-focused.
Your team owns critical layers of the ScyllaDB server core:
- The I/O stack and caches that maintain low latency under heavy load
- Data placement with tablets, ScyllaDB's approach to elastic, dynamic data distribution
- Compaction, repair, and compression to keep data correct, consistent, and efficient over time
- Encryption, backup, restore, and object storage management for customer trust and data protection
You will lead, coach, and grow your distributed team while staying deeply hands-on in designing, coding, and reviewing performance-sensitive software. You'll develop in the open as part of a collaborative open-source community and champion the use of AI tools to increase team velocity. Communication is critical—you'll engage clearly and publicly through mailing lists, commit messages, design discussions, and bug reports. You'll partner closely with field, cloud, and core development teams to translate real-world customer needs into robust engineering solutions.
The role offers the opportunity to work on infrastructure that powers some of the world's most demanding production deployments, where every microsecond counts.
