Proxima Fusion is Europe's fastest-growing fusion company and the continent's best-funded fusion player, backed by over €650M. As a spin-out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, the company is developing hardware and infrastructure for the world's first commercial stellarator fusion power plant. The team spans Munich, Zurich, and Oxford.
In this Software Engineer role on the Simulation Platform team, you will design, develop, and maintain next-generation software solutions for stellarator simulation and design. Your work will span the full platform: automating large-scale simulation workflows, managing cloud-based data storage for team synchronization, and building applications that foster cross-domain collaboration and knowledge discovery. You'll integrate AI tools where they provide genuine leverage.
You will also serve as a forward-deployed engineer, working directly with researchers to apply simulation tools to specific use cases. This includes guiding users to maximize available tooling and proactively co-developing applications that unblock their R&D program.
The role combines platform engineering with user-facing impact: you'll optimize scientific computing workflows while building cloud and web-based systems for data management, sharing, and exploration. You'll work alongside physicists and engineers, with your innovations in simulation tools directly accelerating Proxima's stellarator design program.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficiency in Python
- Desirable (but not required): Pydantic, JAX, full-stack web development (React, TypeScript, FastAPI), cloud services and cloud-based applications, data management systems
- User-first mindset with ability to tackle diverse challenges
- Commitment to staying current with software development best practices and tools (e.g., agentic development, modern data pipelines and scheduling solutions)
- Continuous learning attitude and ability to absorb domain knowledge in a dynamic startup environment
