Salary: USD 160,000 - 220,000 / annual
Discord is seeking a Software Engineer to join its Safety Processing team, responsible for building and operating the infrastructure that powers content moderation, enforcement, and safety signal processing at massive scale across the platform.
You will work on critical systems that detect and review harmful content, collaborating closely with Trust & Safety, ML, Policy, and product teams. The role involves designing and maintaining production systems that operate at scale, participating in on-call rotations, and applying an adversarial mindset to identify security vulnerabilities, abuse scenarios, edge cases, and scalability concerns.
Discord's Safety Engineering teams have developed Osprey, an open-source investigation and incident response tool that has been donated to ROOST, reflecting the company's commitment to industry-wide safety improvements. This is an opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure from design through post-launch iteration.
Key responsibilities:
- Scale and improve Discord's ability to review and detect harmful content
- Build and maintain production systems operating at massive scale with on-call participation
- Apply adversarial thinking to security, abuse scenarios, edge cases, and scalability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions
Requirements:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on backend services and/or infrastructure in Python or similar languages
- Experience building and operating distributed systems and production services at scale (GCP, AWS, or equivalent)
- Strong debugging skills and ability to navigate complex, multi-service codebases
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional partners
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with content moderation, trust & safety, or related problem domains
- Experience with observability tooling, metrics, and monitoring systems at scale
- Strong passion for Discord and making online communities safer
