The Plugin Ecosystem team at OpenAI builds the platform and product experiences that enable users to extend ChatGPT and Codex through plugins, skills, connectors, interactive apps, and open standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The team focuses on making plugins easy to discover, install, and use, ensuring they're invoked at the right time, and helping users find new ways to extract value from them.
You will design and ship APIs, SDKs, and services that developers use to extend ChatGPT and Codex. You'll build intuitive experiences that help users discover, install, and use plugins effectively. Your responsibilities include making plugins easier to create, test, publish, update, and share; improving when and how models use plugins; enhancing plugin reliability and interaction quality across products with clear error messages and recovery paths; and building consistent permissions, approvals, and admin controls for organizational adoption.
You'll work across teams—engineering, Product, Research, Security, and Trust & Safety—to scale plugin infrastructure and deliver safe, reliable execution. You'll collaborate with developers and partners to turn recurring problems into platform improvements, and work with Research to diagnose failures and measure improvements as models evolve.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
Qualifications and Preferred Experience:
- Strong product quality mindset; ability to make complex capabilities feel intuitive
- Strong opinions about APIs and abstractions with ability to explain tradeoffs; experience with identity, permissions, or integration-heavy systems is especially valuable
- Comfort talking with users and developers to understand their goals and turn recurring problems into product and platform improvements
- Ability to move between product questions and technical details, collaborate across teams, and take ambiguous problems through to production
- Comfortable working across web interfaces and backend systems; experience building applied AI systems, diagnosing model–tool interactions, and measuring reliability and quality is especially valuable
- Track record of building products people rely on or software other developers use (APIs, SDKs, open-source projects, developer platforms, or internal tools with real users)
