Salary: USD 124,000 - 146,000 / annual
Blend is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate the foundational backend systems that power its cloud banking platform. The role focuses on platform engineering, authentication and authorization, developer infrastructure, and secure AI-assisted automation.
You will work on high-impact systems used across the organization: identity and access control, APIs, asynchronous workflows, shared services, and background agents that help internal teams investigate and resolve operational issues. Key responsibilities include:
• Design, build, and operate reliable backend services and shared platform capabilities
• Lead technical design for APIs, distributed systems, data storage, workflow orchestration, and service integrations
• Build secure authentication and authorization systems for users, partners, services, and API clients, including SSO, OAuth/OIDC, MFA, session management, token lifecycle, and role- or scope-based access control
• Improve platform security through strong access controls, auditability, secrets management, tenant isolation, and secure service-to-service communication
• Build background-agent systems that automate support and operational workflows while maintaining clear safety controls and human oversight
• Develop integrations with collaboration, ticketing, source-control, and internal operational tools
• Create safe AI-agent execution patterns, including isolated runtimes, scoped permissions, tool allowlists, approval workflows, and output-safety checks
• Improve reliability and operability through monitoring, tracing, incident response, testing, and performance engineering
• Partner with product, security, infrastructure, and support teams to turn complex requirements into scalable platform capabilities
• Mentor engineers, contribute to technical standards, and lead design discussions across teams
• Lead complex projects, make strong architectural decisions, and set technical direction for broader areas
The technical environment includes Go, TypeScript, Node.js, RESTful APIs, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, event-driven systems, workflow orchestration, Docker, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, JWTs, MFA, RBAC, observability tooling, and AI-agent frameworks.
Blend's platform is used by Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, and over 330 other financial services firms to acquire customers, increase productivity, and deliver end-to-end digital experiences. The software processes an average of more than $5 billion in loans per day.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong backend engineering experience in Go, TypeScript/Node.js, Java, Python, or similar language
• Experience designing and operating production distributed systems, APIs, databases, and asynchronous workflows
• Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, sessions, tokens, identity protocols, and secure API design
• Experience building secure, reliable systems that handle sensitive data and enforce access controls
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and production observability
• Strong system-design skills and ability to make sound technical tradeoffs
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including ability to influence across teams
• Practical ownership mindset: comfortable debugging production issues and improving systems end to end
NICE TO HAVE:
• Experience with AI agents, LLM tool use, automation platforms, or human-in-the-loop systems
• Experience designing secure agent runtimes, sandboxing, permission models, or safety controls
• Experience with enterprise identity integrations and SSO
• Experience with workflow engines, event-driven architectures, or platform engineering
• Experience in fintech, security, healthcare, or another regulated industry
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading cross-team technical initiatives
