Salary: USD 163,000 - 226,000 / annual

You will join the engineering team to design, construct, and oversee Tailscale's global Funnel and DERP relay infrastructure. This role combines extensive network engineering knowledge with software development and SRE/DevOps proficiency to ensure scalability, high availability, and performance of hosted services.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, construct, evaluate, and document networking features, connectivity solutions, and open-source client-code network dataplane
- Enhance and iterate on product capabilities, specifically Funnel and DERP relay infrastructures and their associated network protocols
- Investigate and resolve complex, escalated network issues across diverse technical environments
- Maintain accountability for Tailscale's live services through observability integration, incident management, and technical support escalation handling
- Evaluate and improve performance, reliability, and scaling capabilities of networking resources and systems
- Apply security-centric approaches throughout development, from design to implementation
- Offer architectural guidance and troubleshoot escalated networking problems for customers
- Partner with internal engineering and product teams to advance hosted services and clients
- Contribute to open-source client code and develop the Tailscale product dataplane
The role requires strong motivation, ability to think on your feet, collaboration with highly technical teams, and comfort working asynchronously in an early-stage, fully remote environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven track record in networking software development and troubleshooting
- Expertise in core networking principles such as VPNs, NAT traversal, routing, and IP addressing
- Experience with distributed systems, maintaining global-scale services, and applying SRE & DevOps methodologies
- Experience with Go programming language is highly desired (most systems developed in Go)
- Strong interpersonal skills for exchanging constructive feedback and autonomy to work independently
- Adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
- Superior communication abilities, both written and verbal
