OpenRouter is the leading AI routing and infrastructure layer for enterprises to access, manage, and optimize large language models across providers without lock-in or unnecessary cost. The company powers advanced AI teams by providing flexibility to scale and stay future-proof as models evolve.
You will be OpenRouter's first engineer dedicated to building the money platform—the financial engine that sits behind the inference gateway. Every token flowing through OpenRouter is a financial event: billions of requests across hundreds of models and dozens of providers, each with its own cost, price, discount, and contract terms. You'll envision, build, and own the dollar+token value capture engine that enables the business to sell any pricing model it can imagine.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement flexible pricing and contract terms (any commitment size, BYOK pricing, overages, platform fees, per-seat pricing) so Sales and CS can test new deals without engineering involvement.
- Automate quote-to-cash workflows: take signed contracts directly to provisioned, correctly billed customers with no manual uploads. Handle POC and production contracts as separate flows. Build credit transfers at onboarding and self-serve credit grants.
- Establish the financial source of truth: a robust core system that owns fees, plans, and entitlements with strong data architecture for internal and customer reporting.
- Own usage-to-revenue: meter, price, and record every completed request exactly once across the streaming spend-tracking pipeline and usage records. Reconcile what was served against what was charged.
- Own billing, payments, and collections: invoicing, prepaid credits, auto top-ups, refunds, tax/VAT, POs, spend-against-commitment tracking, Stripe integration, failed-payment recovery, and overdue-invoice collections.
- Build a double-entry ledger as the financial system of record. Automate reconciliation across Postgres, Stripe, billing, and usage data. Own provider settlements and payables, delivering finance-ready close numbers.
- Work cross-functionally with Provider, Trust & Safety, Sales, CS, and Finance teams on usage tracking, cost attribution, pricing, fraud prevention, and abuse prevention.
- Treat correctness and controls as features: ensure idempotency of financial transactions, anomaly detection, auditability, and least-privilege access. Every dollar must be explainable.
Requirements:
- 5+ years building production financial systems (billing, payments, ledgers, or revenue infrastructure) at a fintech or usage-based SaaS company.
- Deep fluency in money-correctness patterns: idempotency, double-entry accounting, exactly-once event processing, reconciliation, and safe migrations of financial data.
- Hands-on experience with Stripe (or similar payment processors) and a billing/invoicing platform, including contract, subscription, and usage-based models.
- Strong TypeScript and SQL. Comfortable with Postgres and analytical stores (ClickHouse or similar) at high event volume.
- Working knowledge of accounting: AR/AP, revenue recognition, deferred revenue, month-end close. Ability to communicate with Finance in their language.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills. You'll partner daily with multiple teams and translate messy business asks into clean systems.
- High agency and AI-forward mindset. You use coding agents daily and enjoy automating manual finance operations.
Nice to haves:
- Experience building usage-based, hybrid, or seat-based billing at scale.
- Experience with streaming data pipelines (Dataflow, Spanner, Kafka) for metering.
- Experience with payments fraud and risk systems (e.g., Stripe Radar).
- Experience with multi-currency, sales tax/VAT, or global payment methods.
- Experience preparing financial systems for audit.
- Existing OpenRouter user or background in AI tooling projects.
