Twilio is seeking a Software Engineer L2 to join the Messaging Channels Team, responsible for powering the future of communications by developing connectivity, compliance, and rich messaging features. This role focuses on enabling adoption of new messaging channels (WhatsApp, RCS, Facebook Messenger) and driving growth of existing ones, serving startups, non-profits, and Fortune 500 companies that send billions of messages annually on the platform. In this position, you will design, develop, and maintain high-performance REST APIs and backend microservices using Java and Go. You'll build and enhance rich messaging features, managing high-throughput message routing and delivery pipelines. The role involves deploying and supporting backend services in AWS (with openness to Azure/GCP experience), prioritizing system reliability, low latency, and fault tolerance. You will actively integrate AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Copilot) into your daily workflow to accelerate output and improve code quality. You'll own system reliability by supporting team on-call rotations to maintain high availability and operational excellence for critical communications services. Collaboration is key—you'll partner asynchronously across distributed engineering teams using clear technical written and verbal communication. The role is fully remote based in the USA, though occasional travel may be required for team in-person meetings and customer engagement. Twilio is a remote-first company with a strong culture of connection and global inclusion. The company delivers innovative communications solutions to hundreds of thousands of businesses and empowers millions of developers worldwide. REQUIREMENTS: Required: - 3+ years of hands-on software development experience building backend services in Java or Go - Experience designing and building production RESTful APIs as a core part of day-to-day role - Experience operating distributed systems on top of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred, or equivalent Azure/GCP experience) - Hands-on use of AI development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to streamline coding, debugging, or documentation - Strong written and verbal technical communication skills - Ability to participate in on-call rotation (includes weekends and holidays) Desired: - Experience with NoSQL datastores (e.g., DynamoDB) - Experience with message queuing (e.g., Simple Queue Service) - Experience deploying and supporting containerized applications in Kubernetes - Prior experience with telecom or rich messaging platforms (RCS, SMS/MMS, OTT messaging)
