North is building the next-generation cloud, AI, and data spend management platform. The company gives enterprises real-time visibility, control, and automation over their digital asset finances, helping them grow efficiently without wasting resources. Backed by top-tier investors, North is establishing itself as the financial operating system for the public cloud. You will be North's first dedicated Internal Tools Engineer, joining the Engineering team to build this function from the ground up. This is a high-ownership opportunity to establish the technical foundation, architecture, and best practices for how the company develops internal tools, integrations, and automations. Rather than inheriting an established roadmap or legacy systems, you'll help define what internal tooling looks like at North and shape how the organization approaches automation as it scales. As a hands-on individual contributor, you'll have significant autonomy to identify opportunities, set technical standards, and build scalable solutions that can be reused company-wide. Your work will lay the groundwork for a future Internal Tools team; the systems, processes, and engineering practices you establish will serve as the foundation for expanding the function. You'll work across all of North to identify manual, repetitive, or inefficient workflows and turn them into reliable software. This could mean building an internal application from scratch, integrating systems through APIs, automating multi-step operational workflows, or using AI to eliminate work that previously required significant manual effort. You won't receive a pre-defined ticket list; instead, you'll understand problems, determine whether and how they should be automated, propose technical approaches, and own solutions through production. Key responsibilities include: building internal tools end-to-end (design, develop, deploy, maintain); automating manual workflows; building AI-enabled workflows using LLMs, APIs, and agents; connecting company systems through integrations; developing Python services and APIs; creating internal dashboards and interfaces for non-engineering users; designing reusable systems and abstractions; owning architecture decisions; maintaining tools in production; implementing strong testing, observability, and error handling; and working directly with internal users to understand their needs and iterate based on feedback. The role sits within Engineering while partnering closely with teams across North, giving you visibility into how the entire business operates and the opportunity to improve it through software. North cares about building internal systems with the same engineering discipline applied to customer-facing products—the goal is reliable, maintainable, reusable tooling that scales with the company, not a collection of one-off scripts. Work Setup: Hybrid based out of the Dumbo, Brooklyn office, with remote US options and opportunities to travel to the office for team onsites. Qualifications: The posting emphasizes problem-solving ability, ownership mentality, and technical depth. Preferred qualifications include 3+ years of software engineering experience; experience building backend services, APIs, or full-stack applications; proficiency with Python; experience with system design and architecture; familiarity with AI/LLM APIs and integrations; experience owning an internal platform or tool from problem discovery through production support; and outstanding recognition in competitions, technical projects, open-source work, or business ventures.
