ngrok is an all-in-one cloud networking platform trusted by 9+ million developers at companies like GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio. The platform secures, transforms, and routes traffic to services running anywhere—from localhost sharing to production AI workloads.
The Infrastructure Platform team builds the systems ngrok engineers rely on to develop, deploy, and operate the platform itself. You'll own internal systems including build pipelines, deployment workflows, infrastructure tooling, service reliability, and the connective tissue that keeps engineering productive and production stable. Your work touches nearly every engineer at the company, so improvements have company-wide impact.
In this role, you will:
• Build and improve the engineering platform: develop systems engineers use daily for development, testing, deployment, and operations. Focus on better tooling, smoother workflows, and fewer operational friction points.
• Treat infrastructure as software: automate operational workflows, improve reliability, and build systems that scale cleanly under production load. Apply software engineering discipline to SRE and DevOps problems.
• Improve developer experience: contribute to builder tools, CI/CD infrastructure, deployment systems, and internal abstractions that make engineers faster and safer when shipping changes.
• Help keep production healthy: participate in maintaining high uptime and operational excellence by improving observability, reliability, and incident response processes.
• Raise the engineering bar: mentor teammates, contribute technical direction, and help evolve the architecture and operational maturity of the platform.
The team works with a modern stack built primarily around Go, PostgreSQL, gRPC, Kubernetes, Terraform, Protobuf, nix, and AWS. Most infrastructure and application code lives in a monorepo powered by extensive code generation and internal tooling. Engineers develop using remote development tools or SSH to connect to remote EC2 environments running a full Kubernetes cluster that mirrors production.
For Bay Area candidates, this is a hybrid role with office presence on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For candidates outside the Bay Area, this is fully remote.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 3+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Experience building and operating distributed systems in AWS or other cloud environments
• Comfort with statically typed, compiled languages such as Go, Rust, C++, or Java (Go is a bonus)
• View operational problems as engineering problems
• Deep care for developer experience and scalable systems design
• Understanding of how systems fail, recover, and evolve over time
BONUS EXPERIENCE:
• Kubernetes, Terraform, nix, PostgreSQL, Kafka, or gRPC
• Observability platforms like Datadog or Honeycomb
• Internal developer platforms or builder tooling
• Networking, infrastructure, or security-focused systems
