ngrok is an all-in-one cloud networking platform trusted by 9+ million developers at companies like GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio. The platform secures, transforms, and routes traffic to services running anywhere, serving use cases from localhost sharing to production AI workloads and site-to-site connectivity.
The Agent team builds the software that sits at the edge of every ngrok connection—the first thing customers install and run, and the last thing the company wants to debug at 3am. The Agent must be fast, correct, and predictable under hostile conditions: flaky networks, broken configs, expired certificates, overloaded laptops, CI environments, and production traffic that doesn't care about feelings.
In this role, you will:
• Build the next-generation ngrok agent on a recently redesigned architecture, shipping new classes of features (networking, integrations, remote management) that weren't previously possible.
• Own reliability at the edge by designing for latency, throughput, and correctness under real-world chaos—network partitions, transient failures, misconfiguration, and resource-constrained machines. Ensure the Agent fails clearly, safely, and explainably.
• Develop SDKs and embeddable integrations that other systems and products depend on. These must be easy to integrate, hard to misuse, and stable over time.
• Make the system observable by improving diagnostics, logging, and metrics so the company can understand what the Agent is doing in the wild and answer customer questions with facts.
• Ship software that runs everywhere: developer laptops, servers, CI systems, containers, and occasionally questionable hardware. Ensure consistent behavior across platforms and environments.
• Collaborate closely with product, platform, and support teams. When something breaks, help explain why. When something is confusing, help make it boring.
The tech stack is primarily Go and TypeScript, running entirely on AWS. Engineers develop using remote development tools and SSH to connect to remote EC2 environments running a full Kubernetes cluster mirroring production. The stack includes Postgres, Kafka, Protobuf, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, Buildkite, React, and GitHub.
Location: Hybrid for Bay Area candidates (commute Tuesdays and Wednesdays); remote for candidates outside the Bay Area. All candidates must be US-based and legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience building systems-level software that had to work under pressure
• Comfort in Go, Rust, C/C++, or Java (bonus points for Go)
• Ability to debug things that "shouldn't be possible"
• Deep thinking about reliability, security, and performance
• Ability to reason about tradeoffs and explain them clearly
• Care about developer experience, not just correctness
Extra credit for experience with: networking, proxies, or agents; SDKs or embeddable runtimes; observability tooling; open-source systems people actually use.
