Braze is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the User Targeting team, which is responsible for segmentation and targeting capabilities that power customer messaging at scale. The team processes billions of users per day through core pipelines, operating in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
In this role, you will build and own features in a complex, high-scale segmentation system that underpins Braze's entire product offering. You'll design and implement features across the Ruby on Rails backend and React frontend, from design review through production rollout. You'll take ownership of medium-sized projects, breaking down work, setting delivery dates, and meeting them with limited oversight.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement features across Ruby on Rails backend and React frontend, managing the full lifecycle from design through production
- Own medium-sized projects end-to-end, breaking down ambiguous requirements into actionable work and delivering on commitments
- Write and optimize queries against MongoDB and ClickHouse, understanding how segmentation performance and cost scale with data volume
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams to clarify requirements and deliver customer-focused solutions
- Write thorough automated tests, conduct code reviews, and participate in on-call rotation to maintain system stability and quality
The team extensively integrates AI into daily workflows, using agentic tools to navigate the large Ruby monolith, create proof of concepts, and transition quickly from requirements to working solutions. AI is leveraged across all stages of product delivery to enhance the team's ability to deliver high-quality results efficiently.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of professional experience building and shipping web applications in full-stack development or back-end services
- Solid understanding of software design, data structures, and algorithms
- Experience with SQL and at least one production database
- Ability to take ambiguous feature requests, ask clarifying questions, and turn them into working, tested code with limited oversight
- Strong communication and organizational skills with a history of thriving in team environments
Bonus qualifications:
- Familiarity with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, React, Sidekiq, and SQL/NoSQL databases
- Previous experience with MongoDB, ClickHouse, Snowflake, or other data lake solutions
- Experience working on high-scale, high-throughput systems
- Passion for customer experience
