Flexport is a global commerce platform that moves over $19B of merchandise across 112 countries annually. The PSI (Platform, Security & Infrastructure) team builds the developer platform and tooling that hundreds of engineers rely on to ship code that moves real freight worldwide.
As a Software Engineer II on the Platform team, you will own well-scoped projects within the developer platform, typically working with a small group of teammates. You'll engage directly with internal engineers who use your tools, dogfood the platform, and build a deep understanding of their problems and goals. You'll design and ship improvements that remove friction from their workflows, receiving guidance and mentorship from senior engineers while building real ownership of your projects from conception through production.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building paved paths and self-serve tooling that make the right thing the easy thing
- Building and supporting CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions), build tooling (Gradle, Bazel, npm/pnpm/bun, Go, Cargo), and artifact repositories (Artifactory, ECR, GitHub)
- Improving backend and frontend developer experience through projects you scope and deliver
- Contributing to the GraphQL and gRPC ecosystem: middleware, federation, schema sharing, CLIs, codegen, servers and clients
- Contributing to IAM solutions and primitives to ensure security and ease-of-use by default
- Helping engineers use and understand container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS) and observability stacks (OpenMetrics, Datadog)
- Gathering feedback from internal users, turning it into clear problem statements, and working with your team to prioritize what's worth building
The role offers real leverage—improvements you ship are used by hundreds of engineers and thousands of deploys daily. You'll have meaningful end-to-end ownership from developer research through production rollout to measuring impact. You'll work alongside senior engineers, receive regular feedback, and build skills for larger-scope work.
Flexport operates on a hybrid model with 3 days per week in the Amsterdam office for collaboration and shipping together. The company provides latest hardware and software, including frontier AI models.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2-5 years of software engineering experience, ideally including time on developer platforms, internal tooling, or infrastructure that other engineers depend on
- Full-stack curiosity: comfortable in backend services and building competency across frontend build pipelines, Kubernetes manifests, and CI configuration
- Hands-on experience with some of: CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions preferred), container orchestrators (Kubernetes preferred), build tooling across multiple languages, backend-for-frontend solutions (GraphQL preferred), service-to-service communication (gRPC preferred), metrics, or artifact storage. You don't need all of them but should be ready to learn the rest
- Strong grasp of problems and goals: ask the right questions, understand who you're building for and why, and explain how your work connects to broader team goals
- Care for internal users: treat engineers as customers, gather feedback, and verify that what you shipped actually helped
- Ownership mindset: take projects from idea to production rollout, keep stakeholders informed, and raise risks early
- Pride in fixing what's broken: tackle tech debt in your area and help carry out migrations with guidance on larger efforts
- Good communication: write clear design docs, participate in developer interviews, keep teammates updated
- Helpful attitude: get people unblocked and make their work easier
- Growth mindset: seek feedback, learn quickly, build toward broader scope and impact over time
NICE TO HAVE:
- Exposure to data-driven DevX development using metrics such as DORA
- AWS experience
- Familiarity with Identity and Access Management concepts (JWTs, OIDC, fine-grained authorization)
- Terraform experience
