Salary: CAD 133,000 - 183,000 / annual
Affirm is hiring a Software Engineer II, Backend to join the Purchasing Power organization. You will design and implement new features in the underwriting platform supporting Affirm Card, e-commerce integrations, and the Affirm app. Working with Product, Credit Risk, and your engineering team, you'll break down larger projects into phases, collaborate across functions to articulate technical constraints and trade-offs, and ensure timely delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Breaking down projects into individual tasks with support from your tech lead and manager, delivering work in multiple phases
- Collaborating with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and decision-making
- Supporting operations and availability by creating/monitoring metrics, escalating issues, and participating in on-call rotations
- Contributing to team culture through code reviews, interviews, and peer support
- Writing clear, well-tested, and extensible code that interacts with multiple software components
- Navigating large codebases, debugging, and providing constructive feedback
You'll have direct impact on Affirm's growth and expansion while maintaining safety and responsibility for customers.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
- Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
- Familiarity with distributed systems building blocks and technologies: AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes
- Ability to translate business scenarios into solutions across multiple software components
- Comfortable navigating large codebases, debugging, and code review
- Demonstrated ownership of personal growth and proactive feedback-seeking
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for global team collaboration
