Flywire is seeking a Software Engineer II to contribute to its billing and payments platform that processes hundreds of millions in money movement for colleges and universities globally. This is a full-stack role requiring both technical depth and the ability to work across diverse client requirements.
You will work closely with US-based software engineering and product teams while collaborating with teams across multiple time zones. The role emphasizes pragmatic design, quality, security, and scalability—never sacrificing these for speed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality, testable, and maintainable code within the billing and payments system
- Leverage AI tools as a force multiplier for code exploration, test scaffolding, and producing production-quality code
- Ensure security, quality, scaling, and performance standards are maintained
- Communicate effectively across engineering and product teams
- Participate in collaborative problem-solving and solutioning meetings, engaging in constructive debate
You are a self-reliant engineer who takes ownership of tasks while knowing when to escalate well-formed questions to leadership. You adapt quickly to new systems and legacy codebases, manage your time effectively, and thrive in global collaboration with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Requirements:
- 3–6 years of professional experience in application development
- Professional experience with Java development in production environments
- Understanding of relational databases (MySQL)
- Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSP (Java Server Pages)
- Comfort using AI-assisted development tools and writing comprehensive test cases (JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ)
- Nice to have: Spring Core, Spring MVC, Spring Batch, Hibernate
- Experience in FinTech or Higher Education sectors is appreciated
- Familiarity with student billing/tuition workflows is a plus
