Clasp is a venture-backed fintech startup focused on expanding access to education and economic mobility. The company operates two business lines: Clasp Talent, which helps healthcare employers attract and retain talent through student loan repayment programs, and Clasp Finance, which provides lending technology to colleges and universities for private student loan programs. Clasp is a Forbes Fintech 50 company and portfolio company of SHRM.
The Foundations team owns core services and infrastructure that all Talent domain teams depend on, including user management and SSO, notifications, data exchange with employers and schools, and shared platform patterns. As a Software Engineer on Foundations, you will report to the Tech Lead and work with teammates, product partners, and engineers across domain teams.
You will own pieces of shared services from design through production, growing into larger system ownership. The role emphasizes using AI tools deliberately to move faster, caring about clean APIs and reliable systems, and asking good questions when direction is unclear. Clasp operates a DevOps culture where engineers have full ownership of the code they write and the infrastructure it runs on.
Key responsibilities include: building and maintaining features in shared services (user management, authentication, SSO, RBAC, notifications); implementing and maintaining data exchange integrations and APIs with employers, schools, and partners; writing reusable services, libraries, and documentation for other teams; writing clean, tested, maintainable code across front end and back end; applying AI-assisted development techniques; working with Product, QA, Security, and Compliance on identity and access requirements; improving CI/CD pipelines, test coverage, and observability; and participating in on-call rotation.
The role requires strong communication, documentation skills, and a genuine interest in technology that expands access to education and economic mobility.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally at a SaaS startup, with experience owning features end to end
- Strong fluency in Python (Django, Flask, FastAPI, or similar) and TypeScript/JavaScript (React, Next.js), with working knowledge of PostgreSQL
- Experience building and consuming APIs, and understanding of authentication and authorization basics (sessions, tokens, OAuth, role-based permissions)
- Experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions or similar) and cloud infrastructure (AWS or Google Cloud), and comfort debugging in production with logs and monitoring
- AI-native workflow: use coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude, etc.) as a real force multiplier, not just for autocomplete
- Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation that other engineers want to read
- Genuine interest in technology that expands access to education and economic mobility
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with SSO (SAML, OIDC) or user provisioning (SCIM)
- Experience building notification or messaging systems (transactional email, templating, delivery tracking) or event-driven systems
- Experience with integrations to HRIS, ATS, or other partner systems
- Experience working in a regulated environment such as fintech or financial services
- Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar)
