OpenAI's Applied AI organization is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to help architect and build the next generation of financial systems that power how customers purchase, access, and pay for OpenAI products.
The Financial Engineering team builds systems behind pricing and packaging, checkout, payments, subscriptions, usage-based billing, credits, entitlements, invoicing, and the broader order-to-cash lifecycle. These systems serve consumer subscriptions, self-serve businesses, sophisticated enterprise agreements, developer usage, and emerging monetization models. The work sits at the intersection of product experience and financial infrastructure, requiring strong guarantees around correctness, reliability, security, reconciliation, and auditability.
You will partner closely with Product, Data Science, Finance, Accounting, Risk, Operations, and Go-to-Market teams to launch new offerings and build a financial platform that evolves with OpenAI's rapidly growing product portfolio. You will own ambiguous, business-critical problems from initial definition through launch and long-term operation, bringing a product-oriented mindset and caring about creating simple, trustworthy experiences for both external customers and internal users.
Key responsibilities include architecting backend and distributed systems, designing APIs and data models, building transactional workflows and event-driven architecture, ensuring system correctness and data integrity, communicating with technical and non-technical partners, making thoughtful tradeoffs between near-term delivery and long-term quality, and moving quickly and independently in an environment where requirements evolve.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend, platform, or distributed systems
- Strong fundamentals in API design, data modeling, storage systems, transactional workflows, and event-driven architecture
- Experience building systems where correctness, reliability, observability, security, or data integrity are especially important
- Ability to own ambiguous, business-critical problems from initial definition through launch and long-term operation
- Product-oriented mindset with care for creating simple, trustworthy experiences
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical partners
- Ability to make thoughtful tradeoffs between near-term delivery and long-term system quality
- Ability to move quickly and independently in evolving environments
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with payments, subscriptions, billing, pricing, credits, entitlements, invoicing, revenue systems, or monetization infrastructure
- Experience with high-scale financial or transactional systems, reconciliation workflows, compliance requirements, or audit controls
- Experience building shared platforms, APIs, frameworks, or developer tools used by multiple product teams
