You will join the Cypher team, working at the core of Neo4j's database engine. The Cypher query planner receives query strings and transforms them into efficient, logically sound execution plans. This role focuses on optimizing how the database retrieves data from underlying stores and indexes of the property graph model.
As a Cypher Software Engineer, you will enhance and optimize the query planner while contributing to comprehensive feature development that elevates Cypher language and Neo4j database capabilities. Your impact spans the entire codebase—from parser to storage files and indexes. Success requires abstract thinking, ability to discuss design trade-offs, and anticipation of edge cases.
The team is distributed across multiple locations, so comfort with remote collaboration is essential. You'll work in an Agile environment with emphasis on test-driven development, pair programming, and continuous optimization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Experience with performance-driven development (profiling, benchmarking, code optimization)
- Familiarity with Agile development processes (TDD, kanban/scrum, pair programming)
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn Scala
- Desire to learn and grow
Nice to have:
- Programming experience in Scala and/or Java
- Understanding or experience with database design and implementation
- Interest or experience developing compilers
- Strong foundation in algorithm design and analysis
- Interest in exploratory learning and translating academic research into production systems
- 5+ years developing high-quality, highly scalable production-level software
