You will join the Cypher team at the forefront of optimizing Neo4j's core query processing engine. The Cypher language is Neo4j's query language, and this role focuses on the query planner—the component that receives query strings and transforms them into efficient, logically sound execution plans. You will work on determining the most rapid and effective means of retrieving queried data from the underlying stores and indexes of the property graph model.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhance and optimize the query planner to improve performance and correctness
- Contribute to comprehensive feature development that elevates Cypher language capabilities
- Impact the entire codebase, from parser to storage files and indexes
- Think abstractly about design trade-offs, discuss pros and cons of different approaches, and anticipate edge cases
- Work as part of a distributed team across multiple locations
The role requires strong software engineering fundamentals with a focus on performance-driven development. You will engage in profiling, benchmarking, and code optimization. The team uses Agile practices including TDD, kanban/scrum, and pair programming.
Requirements:
- Experience with performance-driven development (profiling, benchmarking, code optimization)
- Familiarity with Agile development processes (TDD, kanban/scrum, pair programming)
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn Scala
- Strong desire to learn and grow
Nice to Have:
- Experience programming in Scala and/or Java
- Understanding of or previous experience with database design and implementation
- Interest or experience in compiler development
- Strong foundation in algorithm design and analysis
- Interest in exploratory learning and translating academic research into production-grade products
- 5+ years of experience developing high-quality, highly scalable production-level software
