Culture Biosciences is seeking a Software Engineer with automation and control expertise to design, build, and maintain automation systems for their bioreactor and bioprocessing platform. The company's mission is to simplify and accelerate bioprocess development, enabling customers to bring biopharmaceutical products to market faster through a cloud-connected platform that merges products, services, and data management for mammalian, microbial, and viral vector production processes. In this role, you will own the full stack from cloud software interfaces through low-level control of physical devices (Ethernet to USB). You'll tune and troubleshoot control loops in real-world environments, diagnosing oscillation, lag, overshoot, and instability. You'll improve automation reliability through monitoring, logging, fault detection, and recovery mechanisms. A key responsibility is evolving the AsyncAPI hardware interface so higher-level automation and AI systems can safely interact with physical equipment with explicit permissions, validation, and fail-safe behavior. You'll develop and optimize feedback control systems, including PID control loops, for stability, performance, and robustness. You'll build software interfaces for sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, and higher-level orchestration systems. This role requires partnering across mechanical, electrical, process, and software engineering teams to translate system requirements into reliable control implementations. You'll also learn about biotechnology and bioprocess development as part of the role. The work is mission-critical: the software controls physical processes that run for days at a time, where failures can ruin expensive experiments. You'll be responsible for ensuring reliability, scalability, and repeatability of operations. REQUIREMENTS: - 4+ years of industry experience including 2+ years developing software - Working knowledge of sensors, actuators, and data acquisition, and failure modes - Strong understanding of classical control theory, especially PID control, feedback loops, stability, response tuning, and disturbance rejection - Strong working relationship with scientists and ability to translate process requirements into control logic - Technical rigor: testing assumptions, validating behavior against data, understanding failure modes - Strong systems thinking and ability to work across hardware and software boundaries - Kind, curious, and enjoys learning new things PREFERRED SKILLS: - Experience in robotics, manufacturing automation, biotech automation, or complex electromechanical systems - Professional software engineering experience, including CI and automated testing - AWS, Docker, infrastructure as code, or connected edge devices - Exposure to regulated environments (GLP/GMP, ISO) - Familiarity with sampling, filtering, sensor noise, and actuator constraints
