Thought Machine is building modern cloud-native banking technology to replace legacy systems at the world's largest financial institutions. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will design, implement, and develop scalable, performant microservices that power Thought Machine's Vault product. You'll work across the full development lifecycle—from translating customer requirements into trackable tickets, through design and implementation, to managing and debugging deployments from testing through production. The role emphasizes engineering excellence, adopting best practices in continuous deployment and monorepo-style development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, implement, and develop scalable, performant microservices using best practices
- Write automated unit tests and integration tests as an integral part of the development cycle
- Interface with other engineering teams to ensure features are added in a structured and coherent way
- Manage and debug deployments from testing environments through production
- Translate customer requirements into trackable tickets and define deliverables
This is a full-time, permanent position based in the Lisbon office, requiring four days per week onsite.

REQUIREMENTS
Essential:
- Experience with either Python or Golang
- Experience developing automated tests as an integral part of the development cycle
- Interest in working on client-facing projects, conducting scoping and defining deliverables
Desirable:
- Knowledge of banking/finance
- Experience with AWS or other cloud providers
- Familiarity with databases (SQL or NoSQL)
- Experience with client/server software architectures, networking, or microservice architectures
- Experience with orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or Mesos
- Experience developing and deploying AI-powered applications
- Experience with user-centered design principles and building self-service platforms
