Scotch is building a next-generation operating system for beverage alcohol retailers, combining POS, payments, back office, and e-commerce into a unified platform. The company is modernizing the $1.6T beverage alcohol market by helping retailers run more efficiently through streamlined payments, inventory management, reporting, and operations. Founded by alumni from Skupos (acquired 2023) and Drizly (acquired by Uber), Scotch has raised $28M from top-tier investors including VMG Partners, First Round, and Lerer Hippeau, and closed a $20M Series A in 2026 off 500%+ YoY growth and $1B+ in processed payment volume. You will own the QA strategy for the POS app, back office, and payments systems, deciding what gets automated, what gets tested manually, and what blocks a release. Key responsibilities include building and maintaining automated test suites across layers (unit, integration, E2E, API, and contract tests), wiring tests into CI/CD (GitHub Actions) to provide fast feedback on every pull request, and turning the release process into evidence-based gates with regression results, upgrade testing, and staged rollouts. You'll test on real hardware in real conditions—Elo terminals across Android versions, card readers, scanners, printers, offline mode, and flaky networks—and drive payments quality including processor certification, refund edge cases, and failure modes. You'll build test data and environments with seeded merchant data and emulators, leverage AI tools to move faster, partner with support to shorten bug reproduction cycles, and track quality with clear metrics like escaped defects, crash-free sessions, and release health. You'll also raise the quality bar across engineering by reviewing test plans in design and coaching engineers on testable code. Qualifications & Requirements: - 6+ years in QA or software engineering in test, including 2+ years as the senior or lead quality owner for a shipping product - Track record of building test automation from scratch, not just maintaining existing suites - Strong coding skills in Kotlin, Java, Ruby, TypeScript, or Python; test code that engineers are happy to review - Hands-on experience with modern frameworks (Espresso, Maestro, Appium, Playwright, Cypress, or similar) and running them in CI - Experience testing APIs, data integrity, and integrations between systems - Sound judgment about risk: knowing when a bug should block a release and when it shouldn't - Clear writing for different audiences, from bug reports to release notes Nice to haves: POS, retail, or payments experience including card-present testing and processor certification; device fleet management and MDM; hardware peripherals (card readers, scanners, printers, cash drawers); Rails test tooling (RSpec, Capybara) or contract testing (Pact); feature flags (LaunchDarkly) and staged rollouts; release-health and observability tools (Crashlytics, PostHog, Sentry); fluency with AI coding and testing tools (Claude Code, Cursor, AI-assisted test generation).
