Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonized energy system. The company controls hundreds of thousands of distributed energy assets—vehicle chargers, heating systems, and home batteries—and moves energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green. Backed by Energize Capital and Accel, Axle operates at high speed in a legacy industry, moving gigawatt-hours of electrons while scaling rapidly to meet customer demand.
As a Software Engineer, you will build core infrastructure for connecting to distributed energy devices, orchestrating them, and enabling participation in electricity markets. This is a generalist role spanning product engineering, DevOps, and data engineering. You'll own as much of the problem-space as you can: talking to clients, gathering user feedback, and working closely with market operators. The company operates in a deliberately flat structure with fewer layers, faster decisions, and more ownership for everyone.
Your work will involve forming deep understanding of the energy domain and business to execute independently at speed, focusing on outcomes over process, and taking ownership for end-to-end product delivery. You'll manage your own time and adapt to changing scope and deadlines, delivering high-impact value efficiently.
The tech stack includes Python and React for the frontend, Docker for deployment consistency, GCP for cloud infrastructure, and Claude Code for AI-assisted development. The company encourages aggressive exploration of AI tools and regular workflow reconsideration.
Axle offers a meaningful equity stake alongside competitive salary (total compensation £75k–£200k base + equity), enhanced parental leave, bi-annual team retreats, and hybrid working with a dog-friendly office near Farringdon. The company maintains a 1:1 median compensation ratio between founders and team. You'll spend 2–3 days per week in the office to maximize collaboration.
REQUIREMENTS: The posting does not explicitly state years of experience, specific technical certifications, or formal education requirements. However, the role expects strong software engineering fundamentals, Python proficiency, familiarity with React, Docker, and cloud deployment (GCP), and comfort with full-stack generalist work spanning backend, frontend, DevOps, and data engineering. Domain knowledge in energy or distributed systems is not required but would be valuable.
