Mach9 is building AI-powered geospatial tools that transform civil infrastructure design. The company's Digital Surveyor platform automates the conversion of massive LiDAR datasets into precise CAD deliverables, reducing manual drafting time by 96×. This role focuses on the 3D rendering engine that powers the platform—a browser-based system capable of rendering tens of millions of points while supporting CAD-grade picking, clipping, snapping, and measurement operations. You will work directly on the production 3D engine and the tools built on top of it. This is not a demo project but a real, performance-critical system handling large, messy real-world datasets. Key responsibilities include: - Building and extending 3D tools that surveyors use to inspect point clouds and create precise engineering drawings - Extending the point-cloud renderer and GPU picking system - Solving geometry problems behind clipping, snapping, construction planes, and camera controls - Finding and fixing performance bottlenecks that emerge with large real-world datasets - Improving shared rendering and interaction systems that power CAD tools You'll be trusted to own your work and drive meaningful outcomes. The role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys tackling difficult technical problems, researching solutions, testing assumptions, and choosing practical approaches when the right path isn't obvious. Mach9 is backed by Y Combinator, Quiet Capital, and investors from Cruise, Autodesk, Adobe, and DoorDash. The team works primarily out of the SoMa office in San Francisco with flexibility for remote work. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong foundation in 3D math and spatial reasoning, including transforms, planes, and projections - Experience building software through coursework, personal projects, internships, or full-time work - Ability to read and modify code you did not write - Attention to correctness and performance - Sound judgment about when to refine a solution and when to ship - Experience with TypeScript and browser graphics, or comparable experience writing performance-sensitive graphics code in a statically typed language - Initiative to investigate problems, ask useful questions, and finish what you start BONUS EXPERIENCE: - WebGL, GLSL, Three.js, Cesium, or other real-time graphics systems - Point clouds, geospatial data, or large-coordinate rendering - Applying geometry, spatial algorithms, or numerical methods to open-ended problems with noisy data and real-world tradeoffs - CAD, mapping, visualization, robotics, or game-engine projects
