The Institutional Transfers team powers the platform that enables clients to move investments to and from Wealthsimple reliably and transparently. The team operates across two sub-teams: Transfers Platform (workflow architecture, operational tooling, automation) and Transfers Experience (expanding product offerings for account transfers). Both teams partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, CX, and other Engineering teams.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead a software engineering team while shaping technical direction, delivery strategy, and culture. You'll report to an Engineering Director and contribute to the broader engineering leadership community, helping build systems that support thousands of account transfers daily.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and growing a high-performing, inclusive team through hiring, coaching, feedback, career development, and performance management
- Setting clear technical direction and roadmap with Product and Design, balancing new capabilities with reliability and maintainability
- Ensuring scalability and reliability of the transfer platform and operational tooling
- Partnering with Operations and CX to automate manual work and improve transfer process accuracy, transparency, and speed
- Helping teams build new ways for clients to move accounts, using data-driven iteration
- Promoting strong engineering practices including design, code review, testing, observability, documentation, on-call health, and incident response
- Championing AI-first development tools to improve team output
- Working across teams (Institutional Transfers, Bank and Brokerage Linking, Infrastructure, Security, SRE) to resolve dependencies and deliver end-to-end outcomes
- Staying current with industry best practices and holding teams accountable
Success in the first six months means building strong relationships with team and partners, establishing clear goals and development plans, understanding system and operational health, and shaping a roadmap that improves reliability, delivery, and client/operational experience.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience managing and developing software engineering teams (hiring, mentoring, feedback, performance management)
- Technical depth in production software development and distributed systems with judgment to guide architecture and implementation decisions
- Experience delivering reliable products with cross-functional partners in complex or regulated environments
- Practical understanding of modern backend and frontend systems, relational databases (SQL), event-driven architectures, and cloud infrastructure
- Effectiveness communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong commitment to inclusive leadership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement
- Comfort supporting team through on-call duties and system maintenance
NICE TO HAVES:
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, React Native, GraphQL, Kafka, Temporal, Kubernetes, AWS, Datadog, or Sentry
- Experience with Java, Kotlin, Python, or mobile development
- Fintech, banking, brokerage, or financial data handling experience
- Familiarity with institutional transfer rails (ATON, Fundserv)
